Base Number Conversion

People use base 10 to count. Many people aren't even aware that other number bases exist. However, you can count in any base you want. To understand other bases it helps to first understand base ten. When you count in different bases, you start at 0 and go to one less than the base (we went to 9 before carrying).

When you add one more, you carry and drop the preceding place back to 0. You can get the place value by raising the base to the appropriate power. Sometimes the base is larger than 10. Since we don't have special symbols to stand for the bigger numbers, we use letters.

A numeral system (or system of numeration) is a writing system for expressing numbers, that is a mathematical notation for representing numbers of a given set, using graphemes or symbols in a consistent manner. It can be seen as the context that allows the numerals "11" to be interpreted as the binary symbol for three, the decimal symbol for eleven, or as other numbers in different bases.

In this part enter a number of the correct base in just one of the boxes. The page will convert it to the other bases for you. Note: Again there is no check for invalid input, this is the users responsibility.

PLEASE NOTE: In the top section you can convert base ten numbers to other bases, from base two through base sixteen. In the next part you can convert numbers in bases two through sixteen back into base-ten numbers. Note: This page does not check for invalid input. NaN stands for not a number; if you get this check your input.

Available Conversion Units: binary, ternary, quarternary, quinary, senary, septenary, octal, nonary, decimal, undecimal, dozenal, tredecimal, hex, vigesimal, trigesimal
